Isaac Hayes and David Porter were American songwriters, musicians, and producers who were influential figures in the soul and R&B music scenes in the 1960s and 1970s. They are best known for their work at Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where they collaborated on writing numerous hit songs for the label's artists. Hayes and Porter were part of the songwriting team at Stax known as "The Big O," which also included another prominent songwriter, Otis Redding.
Some of the most famous songs written by Hayes and Porter include "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'" for Sam & Dave, as well as "B-A-B-Y" for Carla Thomas. Their work helped shape the sound of Stax Records and contributed to the success of the label during its heyday. In addition to their songwriting partnership, both Hayes and Porter had successful solo careers as recording artists. Hayes, in particular, achieved great success with his solo albums and became a legendary figure in the world of soul music.
