He achieved commercial success as a solo artist in the early 1970s with his album "Hot Buttered Soul," which featured his iconic cover of "Walk On By."
Hayes is also famous for composing the soundtrack for the 1971 film "Shaft," which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums and singles, and his music has had a lasting influence on the R&B and soul genres. Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He passed away on August 10, 2008, in Memphis, Tennessee, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and contributions to the entertainment industry.
