He was born on June 9, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, and began his music career singing in church choirs and local clubs. Wilson rose to fame as a member of the vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes before launching a successful solo career in the late 1950s.
Wilson's powerful and emotive voice, along with his energetic stage presence, led to a string of hits including "Lonely Teardrops," "Higher and Higher," and "Reet Petite." He was also known for his flashy style and charismatic performances, which had a significant influence on future generations of performers. Wilson's career was tragically cut short in 1975 when he suffered a heart attack on stage, leaving him in a coma until his death in 1984 at the age of 49.
