James Carr was an American soul singer who gained recognition in the 1960s and 1970s. He was born on June 13, 1942, in Coahoma County, Mississippi, and began his music career singing in church choirs. Carr signed with Goldwax Records in the mid-1960s and released several singles, including "You've Got My Mind Messed Up" and "The Dark End of the Street," which are now considered soul classics. His emotive and powerful vocal delivery earned him a reputation as one of the most talented soul singers of his time.
Despite his talent, Carr struggled with mental health issues and substance abuse problems throughout his career, which affected his ability to consistently record and perform. He continued to release music sporadically until his death on January 7, 2001, at the age of 58. James Carr's music has since been rediscovered and appreciated by new generations of soul music fans, cementing his legacy as a soul music icon.
