Jean Shepard was a pioneering American country music singer and songwriter. She was born on November 21, 1933, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, and passed away on September 25, 2016, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Shepard was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was known for her traditional honky-tonk style of music. She released numerous hit songs throughout her career, including "A Dear John Letter" and "Second Fiddle (To An Old Guitar)." Shepard was one of the few female artists in the male-dominated country music scene of the 1950s and 1960s, and she paved the way for future generations of women in country music.
Shepard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011, recognizing her significant contributions to the genre. She continued to perform and record music well into her later years, leaving behind a legacy as one of the leading female voices in country music history.
