Jerry Butler is an American soul singer and songwriter who was born on December 8, 1939, in Sunflower, Mississippi. He is also known as "The Iceman" for his smooth, cool vocal style. Butler gained fame as a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and later embarked on a successful solo career.
One of Butler's most famous songs is "For Your Precious Love," which he recorded with The Impressions in 1958. As a solo artist, he had numerous hits including "Only the Strong Survive" and "Hey, Western Union Man." Butler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for his contributions to the music industry. He continues to perform and record music, leaving a lasting impact on the soul and R&B genres.
