Jerry Butler is an American soul singer, songwriter, and musician born on December 8, 1939, in Sunflower, Mississippi. He is best known for his smooth, emotive voice and was a prominent figure in the Chicago soul music scene in the 1960s. Butler first found success as a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions before embarking on a solo career.
Butler's solo career produced several hits, including "For Your Precious Love," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Never Give You Up." He was also known for his collaboration with legendary songwriting duo Gamble and Huff on hits like "Only the Strong Survive" and "Hey, Western Union Man." In addition to his music career, Butler has also been involved in politics, serving as a Cook County Commissioner in Illinois. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
