Jerry Butler is an American soul singer and songwriter who was born on December 8, 1939, in Sunflower, Mississippi. He is known for his smooth and soulful voice, and during the 1960s he achieved success as a solo artist with hits such as "For Your Precious Love" and "Only the Strong Survive".
In addition to his solo career, Jerry Butler was also a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions, along with Curtis Mayfield. Butler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He continues to perform and record music, and his influence on the soul and R&B genres is widely recognized.
