Butler began his music career in the late 1950s as a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions before embarking on a successful solo career in the 1960s.
Throughout his career, Butler has released numerous albums and singles, earning him the nickname "The Iceman" for his cool, sophisticated singing style. He is also known for his contributions to the Chicago soul sound and his influence on later generations of R&B and soul artists.
