Jerry Butler is an American soul singer and songwriter born on December 8, 1939, in Sunflower, Mississippi. He is known for his smooth and emotive vocal style, earning him the nickname "The Iceman." Butler began his music career as a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions before embarking on a successful solo career in the 1960s.


Butler's hits include "For Your Precious Love," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Never Give You Up." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Butler also had a successful career as a politician, serving as a commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, and later as a member of the Chicago City Council. Butler's contributions to music and public service have solidified his legacy as a respected figure in both the music industry and his community.
