He is best known for his smooth and emotive vocals, earning him the nickname "The Iceman." Butler rose to fame in the 1960s as a member of the R&B vocal group The Impressions before pursuing a successful solo career.
In his solo career, Butler released several hit songs, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Never Gonna Give You Up." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
