He was born on November 10, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Gilstrap gained recognition in the music industry for his smooth and powerful vocals, which led to collaborations with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Steely Dan.
Gilstrap is perhaps best known for his work as a backing vocalist on numerous hit songs, including the Grammy Award-winning "We Are the World" by USA for Africa. In addition to his successful career as a session singer, he also released solo music, including the album "Swing Your Daddy" in 1975.
