Jim Weatherly was an American singer-songwriter and former athlete, born on March 17, 1943, in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He is best known for writing the song "Midnight Train to Georgia," which became a hit for Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1973. The song won Weatherly a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and has since become a classic in the soul music genre.


In addition to his success as a songwriter, Weatherly also released several albums as a solo artist and had a Top 10 country hit with his song "The Need to Be." He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, recognizing his contributions to the country and soul music industries. Weatherly passed away on February 3, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music and songwriting talent.
