Born on December 8, 1925, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Smith is considered one of the pioneers of the soul jazz style. He gained prominence in the 1950s and 1960s with his innovative approach to the organ, incorporating elements of blues, gospel, and R&B into his playing. Smith's dynamic performances and improvisational abilities earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated following.
Throughout his career, Jimmy Smith recorded over 40 albums as a leader and collaborated with many other renowned jazz musicians, including Wes Montgomery and Stanley Turrentine.
