He was born on December 8, 1925, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and passed away on February 8, 2005. Smith is known for popularizing the Hammond B-3 organ in jazz music and was a pioneer in the soul jazz genre. His innovative style blended bebop and blues with the unique sound of the Hammond organ, creating a distinctive and influential sound.

Smith began his music career in the 1950s and quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and improvisational skills. He released over 50 albums as a bandleader and collaborated with many other prominent jazz musicians throughout his career.
