Joe Dowell was an American pop singer who was born on January 23, 1940, in Bloomington, Indiana. He is best known for his 1961 hit song "Wooden Heart," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was a cover of a German folk song popularized by Elvis Presley in the film "G.I. Blues." Dowell's version sold over a million copies and earned him a gold disc.
Despite the success of "Wooden Heart," Dowell was unable to replicate its popularity with subsequent releases. He continued to record music throughout the 1960s and 1970s but never achieved the same level of success. Joe Dowell passed away on February 4, 2016, in Bloomington, Indiana, at the age of 76.
