The song was originally written in German as "Muss i denn zum Städtele hinaus" by Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, Bert Kaempfert, and Kay Twomey, and was later translated into English for Dowell's version.

Joe Dowell was an American pop singer born on January 23, 1940, in Bloomington, Indiana. He signed with Smash Records and achieved his biggest success with the hit song "Wooden Heart" in 1961. Dowell continued to release music throughout the 1960s but was unable to replicate the success of his debut single. Despite not achieving significant commercial success after "Wooden Heart," Dowell continued to perform and record music throughout his career. He passed away on February 4, 2016, at the age of 76.
