Joe South was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, born Joseph Alfred Souter on February 28, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia. He achieved success as a songwriter in the 1960s and 1970s, penning hits for artists like Elvis Presley ("Walk a Mile in My Shoes"), Lynn Anderson ("(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden"), and Billy Joe Royal ("Down in the Boondocks").
In addition to his songwriting success, Joe South also had a successful solo career as a recording artist. He is best known for his 1969 hit single "Games People Play," which won him two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Song and Song of the Year. South's music often blended elements of country, rock, and soul, and his introspective lyrics tackled social and personal issues. Joe South was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1979 and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1981. He passed away on September 5, 2012, at the age of 72.
