John Cougar is a stage name used by the American singer-songwriter John Mellencamp. Born on October 7, 1951, in Seymour, Indiana, Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as "Jack and Diane," "Hurts So Good," and "Pink Houses." He adopted the stage name John Cougar early in his career at the insistence of his record company, but later reclaimed his birth name and is now known as John Mellencamp.


Mellencamp's music is often characterized by his heartland rock style, focusing on themes of Americana, working-class struggles, and social issues. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
