John Phillips (1935-2001) was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter, best known as the leader of the popular 1960s band The Mamas & the Papas. The group was known for their close harmonies and hits such as "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday." Phillips was the primary songwriter for the band, crafting many of their most memorable songs. He also produced much of their music, helping to define their signature sound.
In addition to his work with The Mamas & the Papas, Phillips released solo albums and collaborated with other artists in the music industry. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Mamas & the Papas in 1998. Phillips' influence on the music of the 1960s and beyond continues to be celebrated by fans and critics alike.
