Johnnie Taylor was an American singer who was born on May 5, 1934, in Crawfordsville, Arkansas. He was best known for his contributions to the genres of soul, blues, and gospel music. Taylor began his career singing gospel music with groups like the Highway Q.C.'s before transitioning to a successful solo career in the 1960s.
Taylor signed with Stax Records in the early 1970s and released several hit songs, including "Who's Making Love" and "Disco Lady," which both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He was known for his soulful voice and passionate delivery, which earned him the nickname "The Philosopher of Soul." Taylor continued to record and perform throughout the 1980s and 1990s until his death on May 31, 2000, in Dallas, Texas. He was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2004.
