Johnny Horton was an American country music singer and songwriter, born on April 30, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his historical and patriotic-themed songs, including his biggest hit "The Battle of New Orleans" which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. The song also won a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording.
Horton had a successful career in country music with other notable hits such as "North to Alaska" and "Sink the Bismarck". Tragically, his life was cut short when he died in a car accident on November 5, 1960, at the age of 35. Despite his untimely death, Johnny Horton's music continues to be celebrated for its storytelling and unique blend of country, rockabilly, and folk influences.
