Johnny Preston was an American singer born on August 18, 1939, in Port Arthur, Texas. He is best known for his hit song "Running Bear," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1960. The song, a duet with J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), tells the tragic love story of two Native American teenagers.
Preston's success was short-lived, and he was unable to replicate the commercial success of "Running Bear." Despite this, he continued to record music and perform live throughout his career. Preston passed away on March 4, 2011, in Beaumont, Texas, at the age of 71. He left behind a musical legacy with his memorable hit song that continues to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
