King Curtis, born Curtis Ousley on February 7, 1934, was a renowned American saxophonist who made significant contributions to the soul and R&B music scenes. He began his career as a session musician in the 1950s, working with notable artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Coasters, and Buddy Holly. Curtis gained widespread recognition for his distinct style and powerful performances, becoming one of the most sought-after saxophonists of his time.
In the 1960s, King Curtis embarked on a successful solo career, releasing several albums and singles that showcased his dynamic saxophone playing. He is perhaps best known for his iconic saxophone solo on the song "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters. Tragically, King Curtis' life and career were cut short when he was fatally stabbed in 1971 at the age of 37. Despite his untimely death, his music continues to inspire and influence musicians across genres to this day.
