King Curtis & The Kingpins was an American soul and R&B band led by saxophonist King Curtis. The band gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s for their energetic live performances and recordings. King Curtis, born Curtis Ousley, was known for his soulful saxophone playing and was a highly respected session musician, working with artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Coasters, and Sam Cooke. The Kingpins were known for their tight, funky grooves and soulful sound, contributing to the development of the soul and R&B genres.


One of the band's most famous recordings is their instrumental track "Memphis Soul Stew," which showcases their dynamic and soulful sound. King Curtis & The Kingpins were influential in popularizing soul music and were a prominent act in the live music scene during their heyday. Tragically, King Curtis was murdered in 1971, cutting short his promising career, but his music continues to be celebrated and remembered by fans of soul and R&B music.
