Lale Anderson was a German chanson singer and actress born on March 23, 1905, in Bremerhaven, Germany. She is best known for her hit song "Lili Marleen," which became an anthem for soldiers on both sides during World War II. The song was first recorded in 1939 and became immensely popular, leading to Anderson being dubbed the "Sweetheart of the Wehrmacht."
Despite her association with the Nazi regime due to the popularity of "Lili Marleen" among German soldiers, Anderson was not a member of the Nazi Party and was later blacklisted by the regime for her affair with a French POW. After the war, she continued her music career and acted in several films. Lale Anderson passed away on August 29, 1972, in Vienna, Austria, leaving behind a legacy as a talented and controversial artist.
