He was best known for hosting "The Lawrence Welk Show," a musical variety television program that aired from 1951 to 1982. The show featured his orchestra, which was known as Lawrence Welk and His Champagne Music Makers. The orchestra and chorus, led by Welk, gained popularity for their performances of popular music, polkas, and waltzes.
