Leslie Uggams is an American actress and singer, born on May 25, 1943, in Harlem, New York City. She began her career at a young age, making her professional debut at the age of six on the television show "Beulah." Uggams gained widespread recognition for her role as Kizzy in the television miniseries "Roots," which earned her critical acclaim and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In addition to her television work, Uggams has appeared in numerous Broadway productions, including "Hallelujah, Baby!" for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She has also released several albums showcasing her vocal talents, including a successful collaboration with jazz legend Louis Armstrong.
