Lynyrd Skynyrd is a Southern rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964. Tragically, in 1977, a plane crash took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, and several others, leading to the band's breakup. Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 with Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny Van Zant, taking over as lead vocalist. The band continues to tour and record new music, cementing their legacy in the history of Southern rock.
