Major Lance was an American R&B singer who rose to fame in the 1960s. Born on April 4, 1939 in Winterville, Mississippi, Lance began his music career in Chicago where he signed with Okeh Records. He is best known for his hits such as "The Monkey Time" and "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um," which both reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the early 1960s. Lance's smooth and soulful voice, combined with his energetic stage presence, made him a popular performer during the heyday of the R&B music scene.


Throughout his career, Lance collaborated with renowned songwriters and producers such as Curtis Mayfield and Otis Leavill, and he continued to release music well into the 1970s. Major Lance's contributions to the R&B genre have cemented his legacy as a talented artist who helped shape the sound of the era.
