Major Lance was an American R&B singer who rose to fame in the 1960s. Born on April 4, 1939, in Winterville, Mississippi, he moved to Chicago as a child where he began his music career. Lance signed with Okeh Records in 1963 and released his debut single "Delilah" which became a hit and launched his career. He is best known for his soulful voice and energetic performances, which made him a popular figure in the Chicago soul music scene.
Throughout the 1960s, Major Lance had several chart-topping hits including "The Monkey Time," "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um," and "Rhythm." His music blended elements of R&B, soul, and pop, and he was known for his smooth vocals and catchy melodies. Lance's success continued into the 1970s before he took a break from the music industry. He made a comeback in the 1980s and continued to perform until his passing on September 3, 1994. Major Lance's contributions to soul music have left a lasting impact on the genre and continue to be celebrated by fans and music historians.
