Manu Dibango, born Emmanuel N'Djoké Dibango on December 12, 1933, was a Cameroonian musician and songwriter. He was best known for his contribution to the world music genre and his pioneering fusion of jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms. Dibango's most famous song, "Soul Makossa," released in 1972, became a global hit and is considered one of the earliest examples of disco music.
Dibango was a multi-instrumentalist, playing the saxophone, vibraphone, and keyboard among other instruments. Throughout his career, he collaborated with numerous artists from different genres, showcasing his versatility and talent. Manu Dibango passed away on March 24, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19, leaving behind a legacy of innovative music that continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
