The group was initially created as the studio session band for Stax Records, where they played on recordings for artists like Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, and Wilson Pickett. Known for their energetic live performances and soulful sound, the Mar-Keys gained popularity in the 1960s with hits like "Last Night" and "Philly Dog."


The Mar-Keys were instrumental in shaping the sound of Southern soul music and were influential in the development of the Memphis Soul sound. They were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014, recognizing their contributions to the music industry. The band's legacy continues to live on through their recordings and impact on the R&B and soul music genres.
