Marv Johnson was an American R&B and soul singer and songwriter, born on October 15, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. He is best known for being one of the first artists to record for the Tamla Motown label, which later became known as Motown Records. Johnson's most successful single was "You Got What It Takes," released in 1959, which reached the top 10 on both the pop and R&B charts in the United States.
Throughout the 1960s, Johnson continued to release music, including hits like "I Love the Way You Love" and "Come to Me." He also wrote songs for other artists, such as "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose," recorded by soul group The Temptations. Johnson's contributions to the early success of Motown Records and his influence on the R&B and soul music scenes have solidified his place in music history. He passed away on May 16, 1993, leaving behind a legacy of soulful and influential music.
