Artist Bio:
Mary Wells was an American singer who played a significant role in the early success of Motown Records. Born on May 13, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, she became one of the label's first successful female artists. Her breakthrough came in 1962 with the hit single "The One Who Really Loves You," which was followed by the chart-topping success of "My Guy" in 1964. "My Guy" became Wells' signature song and remains one of the most iconic hits of the Motown era.

Wells' success at Motown helped pave the way for other female artists at the label and contributed to the rise of the "Motown Sound." Despite leaving the label in 1964 due to a contract dispute, Mary Wells continued to record music and perform throughout her career. She was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1994. Wells passed away on July 26, 1992, but her contributions to the music industry and her influence on future generations of artists continue to be celebrated.
