Artist Bio:
Mary Wells was an American singer who played a significant role in the early success of Motown Records. Born on May 13, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, she signed with Motown in 1960 and became one of the label's first successful female artists. Wells' breakthrough came with the hit song "My Guy" in 1964, which became her signature song and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She also recorded other popular songs such as "You Beat Me to the Punch" and "Two Lovers."
Despite her success at Motown, Wells left the label in 1964, leading to a legal battle over her contract. She continued to record music for various labels and achieved some success, but never reached the same level of fame as she had at Motown. Wells' influence on the music industry, particularly as a pioneering female artist at Motown, continues to be recognized today. She passed away on July 26, 1992, at the age of 49 due to complications from laryngeal cancer.
