Mary Wells was an American singer who played a significant role in the rise of the Motown sound during the 1960s. She was born on May 13, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan. Wells signed with Motown Records in 1960 and became one of the label's first successful female artists. Her breakthrough came in 1962 with the hit song "The One Who Really Loves You," which was followed by the iconic "My Guy" in 1964, her most successful single reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Wells' smooth and soulful voice, combined with catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics, earned her a place in music history as one of the pioneering figures of the Motown era. Despite leaving Motown in 1964, Wells continued to release music and tour, leaving a lasting impact on the music industry. She passed away on July 26, 1992, but her legacy as a trailblazing artist and influential figure in the development of soul and R&B music lives on.
