Artist Bio:
Mary Wells was an American singer who was one of the first successful female artists in the male-dominated world of Motown Records. Born on May 13, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Wells rose to fame in the early 1960s with hits such as "My Guy" and "You Beat Me to the Punch." She was known for her distinctive voice and her ability to convey emotion in her performances. Wells' success helped pave the way for other female artists in the music industry.
In 1964, Wells left Motown Records due to a contractual dispute and signed with 20th Century Fox. Despite some success with her new label, she never reached the same level of fame as she had at Motown. Wells continued to perform and record music throughout her career, although she never quite regained the same level of success she had in the early 1960s. She passed away on July 26, 1992, at the age of 49.
