Merry Clayton is an American soul and gospel singer who gained recognition for her powerful and soulful voice. She was born on December 25, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Clayton began her music career in the 1960s, singing backup vocals for various artists, including Ray Charles and Elvis Presley.
One of Clayton's most notable performances was her duet with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones' song "Gimme Shelter" in 1969. Her powerful vocals on the track are considered one of the highlights of the song. Clayton has released several solo albums throughout her career and continues to perform as a background vocalist for various artists. She has been recognized for her contributions to music and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 as a member of the background vocal group The Blossoms.
