Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. Mustaine was later replaced by Kirk Hammett. Metallica is considered one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax.


Metallica gained widespread recognition with their 1986 album "Master of Puppets," which is considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The band achieved mainstream success with their self-titled fifth album, commonly known as "The Black Album," released in 1991. Metallica has sold over 125 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists in history. They have won multiple Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Metallica continues to tour and release new music, maintaining their status as one of the most influential and successful metal bands of all time.
