Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The band's original lineup consisted of James Hetfield (vocals and rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Ron McGovney (bass). Mustaine was later replaced by Kirk Hammett, and Cliff Burton took over on bass. The band achieved commercial success with their fifth studio album, "Metallica" (also known as "The Black Album"), released in 1991. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 and has been certified 16 times platinum in the United States.


Metallica is considered one of the "big four" of thrash metal alongside Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. They have won multiple Grammy Awards and have sold over 125 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Metallica is known for their intense live performances, intricate compositions, and heavy guitar riffs. They continue to be a prominent and influential band in the heavy metal genre.
