Artist Bio:
Miriam Makeba, also known as Mama Africa, was a South African singer and civil rights activist born on March 4, 1932, in Johannesburg. She gained international fame for her unique blend of jazz, folk, and traditional African music, as well as her powerful vocals and political activism. Makeba was the first African artist to popularize African music around the world, and she became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement.

Makeba's career spanned over five decades, during which she released dozens of albums and collaborated with renowned artists such as Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon. She used her platform to raise awareness about the injustices of apartheid in South Africa and was exiled from her home country in 1960. Makeba continued to advocate for social justice and equality throughout her life, receiving numerous accolades for her contributions to music and activism. She passed away on November 9, 2008, but her legacy as a pioneering African artist and civil rights icon lives on.
