Modern English is a British new wave and post-punk band that was formed in Colchester, Essex, in 1979. The original lineup consisted of Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), Michael Conroy (bass guitar), Richard Brown (drums), and Stephen Walker (keyboards). The band is best known for their hit single "I Melt with You," which was released in 1982 and became a staple of the new wave genre.
Modern English released their debut album, "Mesh & Lace," in 1981, followed by their breakthrough album, "After the Snow," in 1982. The band's music is characterized by its blend of post-punk and new wave elements, featuring atmospheric soundscapes and introspective lyrics. After disbanding in the late 1980s, Modern English reunited in the 1990s and continue to perform and release music to this day.
