Modern English is a British new wave and post-punk band formed in 1979 in Colchester, Essex. The band's original lineup consisted of Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar), Michael Conroy (bass), Richard Brown (drums), and Stephen Walker (keyboards). They are best known for their hit single "I Melt with You," which was released in 1982 and became a classic of the new wave era.
Modern English released their debut album, "Mesh & Lace," in 1981, followed by their breakthrough album, "After the Snow," in 1982. The band went on to release several more albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s before disbanding in the late 1990s. They reunited in the early 2000s and have continued to perform and release new music. Modern English's music is characterized by their atmospheric sound, melodic hooks, and introspective lyrics, making them a standout band in the post-punk and new wave genres.
