In the 1970s and 1980s, Mtume gained recognition for his work as the leader of the band Mtume, which he formed with his collaborator Reggie Lucas. The band released several successful albums, including "Juicy Fruit" in 1983, which spawned the hit single of the same name. Mtume also worked as a producer for other artists, such as Stephanie Mills and Roberta Flack. He is regarded as a pioneer in the R&B and funk music scenes, known for his innovative sound and production techniques.
