Natalie Merchant is an American singer-songwriter known for her solo career as well as her time as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Born on October 26, 1963, in Jamestown, New York, Merchant began her music career in the early 1980s with 10,000 Maniacs, with whom she released several successful albums before leaving the band in 1993 to pursue a solo career.


As a solo artist, Merchant has released several acclaimed albums, including "Tigerlily" in 1995, which featured the hit songs "Carnival" and "Wonder." Her music is known for its introspective lyrics and folk-influenced sound. Merchant has also been involved in various social and political causes, using her platform to advocate for issues such as environmental conservation and women's rights.
