Percy Sledge was an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama. He is best known for his classic 1966 song "When a Man Loves a Woman," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Sledge's soulful voice and heartfelt delivery made him a prominent figure in the Southern soul music scene of the 1960s.
Throughout his career, Percy Sledge released several other hit songs, including "Warm and Tender Love" and "Take Time to Know Her." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1993. Sledge continued to perform and record music until his passing on April 14, 2015, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconic voices in soul music history.
