Percy Sledge was an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter who was born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama, and passed away on April 14, 2015. He is best known for his iconic song "When a Man Loves a Woman," which was released in 1966 and became a massive hit, reaching the top of the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom. The song is considered a classic of soul music and has been covered by numerous artists over the years.


Sledge's soulful voice and heartfelt delivery earned him the nickname "The King of Slow Soul." In addition to "When a Man Loves a Woman," he had several other hits in the 1960s, including "Warm and Tender Love" and "Take Time to Know Her." Percy Sledge was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, in recognition of his contribution to the genre of soul music.
