Percy Sledge was an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama. He is best known for his classic song "When a Man Loves a Woman," which was released in 1966 and became a huge hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is considered a soul classic and has been covered by many artists over the years.


Sledge's soulful voice and emotional delivery earned him the nickname "The King of Slow Soul." He continued to have success with other hits like "Warm and Tender Love" and "Take Time to Know Her." Percy Sledge was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and continued to perform until his death on April 14, 2015, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
