Percy Sledge was an American R&B, soul, and gospel singer-songwriter born on November 25, 1940, in Leighton, Alabama. He is best known for his classic soul ballad "When a Man Loves a Woman," which was released in 1966 and became his biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also earned Sledge a place in music history as one of the defining voices of Southern soul music in the 1960s.


Sledge continued to release music throughout his career, with other notable hits including "Take Time to Know Her" and "Warm and Tender Love." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Percy Sledge passed away on April 14, 2015, but his music continues to be celebrated and remembered for its emotional depth and timeless appeal.
